CE Certified standing bed for elderly rehabilitation Company: Specification, Ordering and Quality Notes
Design Constraints Behind the Specification
During a private-label launch with a fixed ship date, the frame geometry had to meet both CE marking and the client's dimensional envelope. The standing bed must transition from a flat 900 mm deck height to a full 85° tilt within 45 seconds while supporting a 150 kg user. That cycle time forces a minimum actuator stroke speed of 12 mm/s under load, which in turn dictates a 24 V DC linear drive rated for 6,000 N peak thrust. The base frame uses 50 × 30 × 2.5 mm rectangular steel tube; wall thickness below 2.5 mm introduces flex that exceeds the 5 mm lateral deflection limit at the head end during emergency stop testing.
Critical tolerance: The pivot bore diameter on the tilt linkage must be held to 20.00 ± 0.02 mm. A 0.05 mm oversize increases play by 0.3° at full tilt, which triggers the anti-entrapment sensor false-positive rate above the 0.5% threshold allowed for CE submission.
Mattress retention straps are welded to the frame at 300 mm centres. Moving to bolted brackets adds 1.2 kg per unit and creates a crevice that fails the IPX4 spray test after 200 cycles. The welded solution adds 4 minutes of fixture time but eliminates a warranty claim vector that historically costs 3.8% of first-year returns.
What Actually Determines Performance
The bed's core function is a controlled centre-of-gravity shift. When the deck tilts, the patient's mass moves forward; the actuator must counteract the moment without overshoot. A 150 kg user at 85° generates a 1,250 Nm moment about the pivot. The selected 6,000 N actuator at 210 mm lever arm provides 1,260 Nm — a 0.8% margin. That margin disappears if the actuator's force drops 5% due to voltage sag from a 20 m cable run. Therefore, the control box includes a 2.5 mm² feed cable and a 30 A resettable breaker; thinner cable adds 0.15 Ω resistance and cuts available torque by 7% at end-of-stroke.
The mattress platform uses a 12 mm birch plywood core with 30 kg/m³ high-resilience foam laminated on both sides. Foam indentation load deflection (ILD) at 25% compression must stay between 45 and 55 N after 80,000 cycles (EN 1957). Batches that drift to 40 N cause bottoming-out at the sacral zone, increasing pressure injury risk. The laminate adhesive is a solvent-free polyurethane with a 120 g/m² coat weight; lower coat weights delaminate after 30,000 cycles in 40°C/75% RH ageing.
Safety stops are magnetic Hall-effect sensors positioned at 5° and 80° deck angles. They must repeat within ±0.2° across 10,000 actuations. Sensor drift beyond 0.5° disables the auto-return function, forcing a manual reset that adds 3 minutes to each therapy session — a throughput loss clinics will not accept.
Measured Performance in Real Use
| Parameter | Standard Configuration | Heavy-Duty Option |
|---|---|---|
| Overall length (mm) | 2,150 | 2,250 |
| Overall width (mm) | 980 | 1,050 |
| Deck height range (mm) | 450–900 | 450–950 |
| Max user weight (kg) | 150 | 200 |
| Unit weight (kg) | 78 | 92 |
| Actuator thrust (N) | 6,000 | 8,000 |
| Tilt cycle time (s) | 45 | 55 |
| IP rating | IPX4 | IPX4 |

Field data from 120 units deployed across three Nordic rehabilitation centres show a 0.7% actuator replacement rate at 18 months for the standard configuration. The heavy-duty option runs at 0.2% but adds 14 kg shipping weight, increasing freight cost per unit by €18 on a 40 ft container. For buyers whose reorder cycle is quarterly, the standard version's lower capital cost outweighs the marginal service difference.
Requirements by Buyer Segment
OEM / Private-Label Buyer
- Needs neutral branding surfaces: powder-coat RAL 9016 with ≤ 2 ΔE colour drift after 500 h UV-B exposure.
- Requires CE technical file compilation support — risk analysis, biocompatibility declarations for mattress cover, EMC test report (EN 60601-1-2).
- Orders in multiples of 20 units; prefers knock-down packaging to fit 48 units per 40 ft HC container.
- Lead-time sensitivity: 6 weeks from purchase order to first article inspection.
Retail / Distributor Buyer
- Demands retail-ready packaging: printed corrugated carton with carry handles, multilingual IFU, and serialised barcode label.
- Warranty expectation: 2 years on frame, 1 year on actuator and electronics; spare parts stocked in EU warehouse.
- Orders 5–10 units per SKU; mixed pallets allowed but must not exceed 250 kg per pallet for manual handling.
- Accepts 8–10 week lead time if blanket order covers 12 months.
Inspection Items and Test Methods
Every production lot undergoes a 100% functional test before packaging. The sequence below reflects the actual station order on the line; skipping any step voids the factory's declaration of conformity.
- Dimensional audit: 12 critical points measured with digital caliper (resolution 0.01 mm) — pivot bore, actuator mount centres, deck flatness, overall L/W/H. Acceptance: all within print tolerance.
- Actuator no-load current and speed at 24 V DC; must fall within 4.2–4.8 A and 11.5–12.5 mm/s.
- Load test: 150 kg sandbag centred on deck, full tilt cycle × 3. Verify cycle time ≤ 48 s, no abnormal noise, sensor triggers at 5° ±0.2° and 80° ±0.2°.
- Electrical safety: protective earth continuity < 0.1 Ω, insulation resistance > 2 MΩ at 500 V DC, leakage current < 100 µA (EN 60601-1).
- Coating adhesion: cross-hatch test (ISO 2409) after 96 h salt spray (ISO 9227) — rating 0 or 1 only.
- Mattress cover flame retardancy: EN 597-1 (cigarette) and EN 597-2 (match) — no ignition, no progressive smouldering.
A statistical sample of 5 units per 100 undergoes accelerated life test: 20,000 tilt cycles at max load in 40°C/75% RH chamber. Actuator force decay must not exceed 8% from baseline; frame welds inspected by dye penetrant after test — zero indications allowed.
Volume Planning and Lead Time
Standard configuration holds a rolling safety stock of 30 units (finished, tested, packed). That covers typical distributor top-up orders of 5–10 units with 3‑day dispatch. Private-label runs start at 20 units MOQ; tooling for custom colour or logo embossing adds 10 working days before first article. The heavy-duty option is made-to-order only — 15 units MOQ, 8 weeks lead time because the 8,000 N actuator is not stocked.
Container loading: 48 standard units per 40 ft HC (knock-down, 2 pallets high). Heavy-duty units reduce to 36 per container due to weight limit. Mixed loads are possible but require a signed deviation request; the factory will not guarantee transit damage coverage if the centre-of-gravity envelope is exceeded.
Forecast sharing: buyers who provide a 12‑month rolling forecast with monthly firm commitments receive a 3% price hold and priority on actuator allocation during supply constraints. Without forecast, orders are fulfilled from available stock on a first-come basis.
Questions Buyers Ask Before Ordering
- Can the tilt angle be limited to 70° for a specific clinical protocol? Yes — firmware parameter lock at 70° is a no-cost option if specified at order. The mechanical stop remains at 85°; the limit is enforced by the control board. Changing it later requires a service visit and a new CE declaration addendum.
- What is the warranty process for actuator failure after 14 months? The actuator carries a 24‑month factory warranty. The buyer ships the faulty unit to our EU service hub (address provided at order); we replace and return within 5 working days. Freight both ways is covered if the failure is confirmed as manufacturing defect (no overload, no water ingress).
- Is the mattress cover removable for laundering at 90°C? The standard cover is a welded polyurethane laminate rated for 71°C thermal disinfection (EN 12472). A removable zippered cover in PU-coated polyester (90°C wash, 150 cycles) is available as a €22/unit upcharge; it adds 0.4 kg and 3 mm to deck height.
- How are spare parts managed for a 5‑year horizon? We commit to 5 years of spare parts availability from the last production date of each configuration. Critical spares (actuator, control board, Hall sensors, mattress foam kit) are held in our Netherlands warehouse; lead time 48 hours ex‑stock. Non‑critical items (castors, handset, side rails) are 10‑day lead time.
- Can we ship partially assembled to reduce freight volume? Knock-down configuration splits the base frame, column, and deck into three sub‑assemblies. Assembly at destination requires a 6 mm hex key and torque wrench (15 Nm for pivot bolts). We supply an illustrated manual and a one‑time video call for the buyer's first assembly team.
